Concealed Shoes I & II
During the restoration of Tidalholm (otherwise know as the Big Chill House!) a pair of men’s shoes were found under the floorboards in one of the bedrooms. The practice of concealing shoes in the home dates back centuries in Europe. Its thought they were a guard against witches and evil spirits. Settlers to the New World came armed with their superstitions and the practice persisted into the early 1900’s.
I photographed the shoes to show the patina of time in the leather. In some ways they are a portrait of the original owner, the shape of his foot, the stretch and wear of an uneven gait.
After their moment in the spotlight the shoes will be re-concealed at Tidalholm and left for far off generations to rediscover one day.
